I have all of the non-BL Jillian Michaels workout dvds and was thrilled that my UPS guys beat the snow to deliver this new addition today. It does not disappoint!

Here's the skinny: 7 six minute circuits, no weights, no equipment. Just you and some free space to jump around (you don't even need that much space; trust me, I live in a tiny NYC apartment and am completely able to do all the exercises). Each circuit is made up of a set of exercises performed twice before moving on to the next circuit: full body engagement, plyometrics and some serious core work mid-way through. But the focus is really on getting your heart rate up and Jillian delivers (my husband walked in after I was done and said he'd never seen my face so red before -- so beware! It's a tough enough workout that you might not look stunning immediately after; you can save the stunning for the beach this summer!)

Now, I should mention I have done JM's 30 Day Shred and love love love love it. There's no better way to get in a thorough workout in 22 minutes. This is not The Shred. There are many familiar exercises, but it's a much longer workout and the intensity is modulated to make it possible to keep going for the full 45+ minutes of the workout. I was intent on getting through the whole workout, so I can't speak to what the experience would be like for a beginner. But, the dvd is broken into chapters that split at each circuit, so theoretically, you can progressively build up as your stamina increases. I imagine I will have days when I'm pressed for time and just want to hit 3-4 of the circuits, and the chapters are designed to allow me to pick the ones I most like (or hate! depending on how tough they are!)

I bought this DVD at Target yesterday and did Level 1 (Upper Body) and Level 3 (Abs) this morning. I found them to be challenging but also kind of fun (and fun isn't usually a word I use when describing a Jillian Michael's workout lol). It was nice to see Anita and Natalie from 30-Day Shred again too. These workouts really are only 20 minutes each but as usual Jillian doesn't waste a single minute. You get a good blend of cardio (mostly kickboxing obviously but there are also things like butt-kicks and suicide runs) and sculpting (rows, flies, headbangers) and the time flies by. Some days I just don't have time to do a long workout but now with these I don't really have an excuse because they are only 20 minutes each! There were some exercises in the Ab workout that I've never done before which is always a nice surprise. I am a huge fan of Jillian's workouts and this one is no different. I highly recommend it!

Shred (2012) Jillian Michaels Extreme Shed

I got my copy early today (thanks UPS!) so I thought I would share.

I've only done level one of the workout and WHEW, do I feel accomplished. Jillian begins the video by stating that she encourages you to do both levels of the workout back to back. She got the side eye from me because that simply wasn't happening, at least the first time around. I'm quite sure I could work up to it, because this workout is FUN (please note that I generally hate cardio). I hurled a of couple four letter words at her through out the workout, but never wanted to stop. Some of the movements are a bit ODD, but I'm not a boxer and I've never done jiu jitsu so it makes sense. In Jillian fashion, you complete each circuit twice. Level one ends around 35 mins. At this point Jillian asks if you want to move on to the next level. If not, you can finish with a 5 minute warm up. I previewed level two and there are a ton of new moves. Level two is about 45 mins if you skip the warm up (same one from level 1). Jillian adds modifications throughout (So glad to see Basheera back--love her) for higher and lower levels of difficulty. If you aren't in shape I would imagine that you wouldn't enjoy this workout at first. If you're a Jillian fan who follows the previous videos, you will love it.

Shred-It With Weights (2010) Jillian Michaels

I've been a kettlebell fan ever since I heard Jillian raving about them on her radio show about a year ago (to listen to her radio show archives, go to [...] and type Jillian Michaels into the "Displaying" box in the top right corner). She mentioned that "Crazy Trainer Steve" was teaching her kettlebells and that she had to retrain her brain to just drop the kettlebell instead of doing a negative repetition the way she had always done with traditional weights. Her point was that even the top trainers in the world are always learning something new from THEIR trainers. Nice humble attitude and great information.

I got this video today and couldn't wait to try it out! Workout 1 is 45 min, Workout 2 is 50 min (including warm-up and cool down). Unlike her previous workouts, there is a single, long circuit repeated twice. The moves are basically the same as her previous dvds, but with some moves combined. There are all new people (no Natalie. boo!). And there is a DJ-- not sure why. Overall, I really like these workouts. I've been waiting for her to come out with another dvd in which the workouts are more that 40 min. I'd say workouts 1 and 2 are similar in intensity, but workout 2 has more complicated moves. Decided to rent it before I once again spent money on another exercise program I don't like. I really liked this one and ended up buying the whole 90 day program from amazon. It's a realistic exercise program. I like Jillian, I didn't know who she was before I rented the DVD, guess I don't watch the shows she's on. Anyway, she's down to earth and keeps you motivated!

So far I have only done week 1/2 workouts. They are low impact and easy to follow. I have many of Jillian' exercise videos and this one is definitely great! Hopefully weeks 3/4 will be just as great.

FastFix (2012) Jillian Michaels Kickbox

This DVD contains 3 fast paced and high impact workouts. Jillian Michaels works with 6 other lean and toned ladies, doing boxing and kicking moves. The first two workouts are fairly easy to follow, with the third workout containing challenging and more complex moves. There is also a tutorial.

In all workouts, each exercise is done for about 30 seconds. Ms. Michael moves fast and you do need some space to move your body and kick your legs. The workouts got my heart pumping and my body sweating. Finally, as others have mentioned, both sides of the body are not always worked evenly, (but I think that's normal in regular kickboxing, where one side is more dominant than the other).

Here are the time outlines.

I bought this on the Body Revolution website (cheaper). But I thought I would write a review here so that you have an idea of what you are getting. I lost 23 pounds, 32 inches, and 2 pant sizes on the program. I did not follow the meal plan, but restricted my calorie intake to 1200-1600 calories per day.

There are 15 dvds (12 strength, 3 cardio). Each workout is 4 circuits and 25-35 minutes. The cardio dvds include a single circuit repeated 3 times. You change strength dvds every 2 weeks and cardio dvds each month. You workout 6 days per week (2 days of cardio and 4 days of strength). The cast on these dvds are great. Their form is usually really good (but it depends on who you are following). Jillian is really tough, but the results are there! I remember the first time she had us do push-up jacks, I could only do 1. After two weeks, I could do the entire 30 sec interval of push-up jacks.

If you have bad knees, this might not be for you (especially phase 3). However, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to modify some of the plyo moves in the strength dvds (it's the cardio 3 dvd that is mostly plyo). I admit, I got really sick of the cardio dvds. You are doing them twice per week for a month before you get a new dvd. I ended up substituting those workouts with other cardio dvds (like Kickbox Fastfix).

I would HIGHLY recommend this program. I will be doing another round soon!
